What are five simple exercises to do at home?
Mindful movement is at the heart of effective movement, and practitioners increasingly appreciate and advocate this idea. Observing the natural world offers countless examples of perfectly executed physical motion: a foraging bird pecking at the ground with deft, precise movements, a baby reaching out to grasp a hand or turning toward a parent.
Yet somewhere along the way, many of us seem to lose this innate ability. Whatever the reason, we find ourselves having to relearn ‘the art of movement’. Tai chi and yoga are widely understood to connect the mind and body, but regular sporting activities also reveal the strength of this connection- especially at elite levels.
You don’t have to be an elite athlete to benefit. Any focused physical action can be valuable. One focused action followed by another creates a connection between body and mind. Even complex, choreographed sequences are essentially a series of individual, connected mind–body actions. In fact, all movement, no matter how insignificant – from opening a door to picking up an object – can help strengthen the connection between mind and body.
That being said, you could try the following simple exercises: arm raises, bodyweight squats, push-ups or wall push-ups, glute bridges and calf raises. Just be sure to be mindful 🙂
